Pacquiao dominates Rios in Macao

Pacquiao dominates Rios in Macao

After two straight losses, welterweight superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) rebounded with a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over former world champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (31-1-1, 23 KOs) on Saturday night before 13,101 at the sold out Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena in Macao, China.

There were good exchanges in rounds one and two with the faster Pacman getting the better of it. Pacquiao began moving more in round three and took control of the fight, landing hard shots while Rios stalked him. By round seven Rios was cut over both eyes as Pacquiao continued his assault. Rios was outworked in every round and he simply couldn’t solve Pacquiao’s style. Pacman was content to punish Rios for all twelve rounds, winning by scores of 120-108, 119-109, 118-110.

Undefeated IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (18-0, 9 KOs) successfully defended his title in a rematch against the man he dethroned, Billy Dib (36-3, 21 KOs). Gradovich was relentless as he pressured Dib. The Aussie tried boxing, brawling, turning southpaw without success. Gradovich scored a knockdown in round six and got the win in round nine when Dib’s corner asked referee Alan Huggins to stop the fight. Time was 1:10.

Unbeaten heavyweight contender Andy Ruiz, Jr. (21-0, 15 KOs) won when Tor Hamer (21-3, 14 KOs) quit at the beginning of round four. Hamer got off to a good start, hitting Ruiz with many clean shots in rounds one and two. Ruiz, however, upped the pressure in round three and Hamer chose to remain on his stool.

In his most impressive performance to date, two-time Olympic gold medalist and Chinese icon Zou Shiming (3-0) continued his march toward a world title with a one-sided six round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Juan Toscano (4-3, 1 KO). Scores were 60-54, 60-54, 60-52.

Undefeated 2012 Puerto Rican Olympian junior lightweight Felix Verdejo (9-0, 6 KOs) scored a one-sided six round unanimous decision over tough guy Petchsamuthr Duanaaymukdahan (8-2, 1 KO). Petchsamuthr was deducted a point for a low blow in round six. Scores were 60-53 on all cards.

Unbeaten bantamweight Rex Tso (8-0, 3 KOs) scored a first round stoppage of Susu Sithjadeang (7-4, 2 KOs) Tso was credited with a knockdown in round one and then got the stoppage with a barrage of unanswered punches. Time was 2:29.

Unbeaten lightweight Ik Yang (13-0, 8 KOs) scored a six round majority decision over Hero Tito (7-3, 3 KOs). Scores were 57-57, 60-54, 59-55.

Unbeaten super featherweight Harmonito Dela Torre (11-0, 6 KOs) scored a third round KO over Jason Butar-Butar (15-12-1, 11 KOs). Time 1:23.

Super welterweight Kuck Kun Ng moved to 2-0, 0 KOs with a four round unanimous nod over You-Jie Zeng (4-5, 4 KOs). Scores were 40-36 on all cards.

He’s maintained his speed. His explosiveness has come up…he’s tall and broad-shouldered, so you have a great base,” stated world-class Strength & Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza, who talked about some of the comparisons he sees between Mikey Garcia and Manny Pacquiao. Bradley vs. Marquez: The Full Post-Fight Press Conference

Timothy Bradley wants a shot at Floyd Mayweather after latest win

Bradley, who earned a split decision against Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday, would ‘love’ to put his unbeaten record up against Mayweather. But there are many issues that could prevent a fight.

By Lance PugmireOctober 13, 2013, 5:37 p.m.

LAS VEGAS — Timothy Bradley‘s conquest of Juan Manuel Marquez inspired the unbeaten world welterweight champion from Palm Springs to chase even greater glory.

“If a Floyd Mayweather fight could materialize, I’d love it,” Bradley (31-0) said late Saturday after beating Marquez by split decision at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Given the business relationships and years of hard feelings that exist, however, that’s a wish that seems unlikely.

Bradley’s promoter, Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum, and Mayweather split on bitter terms last decade and haven’t worked together since. Top Rank’s biggest fights are on HBO, and world junior-middleweight champion Mayweather (45-0) is in a 30-month, multi-fight deal with rival Showtime.

“I know about all of it,” Bradley said Sunday. “I’ll talk to my promoter and my manager and still see if we can make it happen. I want to fight the top dog in boxing. We’ve got to try.”

Barring a Nov. 23 victory by Manny Pacquiao that could resurrect calls for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Bradley, 30, is clearly the best possible May opponent for Mayweather, whose best Showtime options are unbeaten junior-welterweight champion Danny Garcia and former 140-pound champion Amir Khan.

Attempts to reach Mayweather and his advisors Sunday were unsuccessful.

Bradley said he punched his ticket to the boxing hall of fame in beating Marquez (55-7-1), avoiding the biggest punches of the challenger, who was seeking to win a Mexican-record world title in a fifth weight class.

Marquez said after being frustrated again by Nevada judges following a draw and two narrow losses by decision to Pacquiao that he is leaning toward retirement.

Judge Robert Hoyle scored it 115-113 for Bradley, and Patricia Morse Jarman had it 116-112 for the World Boxing Organization champion. Glenn Feldman of Connecticut scored it 115-113 for Marquez.

“I was quick, elusive, hard to hit and frustrated him,” Bradley said. “I showed I can outsmart him. I’m one of the best fighters in the world now.

“I’m the best possible opponent for Mayweather, but it’s all up to him. Mayweather controls it. He can fight Danny Garcia or Amir Khan if he wants, but I would love a shot at him and think I definitely deserve a shot.

“Mayweather will fight anybody if it makes sense for him. I’ve said I’d like to fight him. I’m not sure what I have to do to fight him beyond that.”

Bradley’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, said Arum and Top Rank President Todd duBoef have told him they’re “very willing to do the” Mayweather fight.

“Floyd Mayweather promotes himself. He can do whatever he wants,” Dunkin said.

“It depends on what the deal is,” Arum said Sunday. “If Mayweather wants to do a negotiation, we’ll do one. We know the legalities and we can work it out. I do what my fighters want.”

To do solid pay-per-view numbers, Arum said, Mayweather wants “a good second side, like he had in” Sept. 14 opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, or last year against Miguel Cotto.

Bradley failed to generate 1 million pay-per-view buys with Pacquiao, but he has boosted his appeal by turning in a possible fighter-of-the-year campaign that included his March brawl against Ruslan Provodnikov.

Bradley, said Arum, “is doing what he needs to do. He fought a very smart fight against a man who was very experienced and a much harder puncher.”

If Mayweather doesn’t happen, the winner of Pacquiao-Brandon Rios makes the most sense for Bradley.

Marquez, meanwhile, not only said he wouldn’t fight in Nevada again, he said he would “retire” after the defeat.

Arum said that if Pacquiao wins next month, the promoter has been approached by businessmen in Mexico who want to bring Pacquiao-Marquez V to Mexico City next year.

“Money is money,” Arum said.

Exiting the arena to the chill of a desert night Saturday, the 40-year-old was asked by a reporter if he really wanted to end his career here.

“It’s a difficult decision,” said Marquez, turning to a reporter, revealing a swollen, bruised face. “What do you think?”

Marquez was told he performed as if he had at least a couple of more fights left in him.

“I don’t think so,” Marquez said, walking away.

Floyd Mayweather could face Amir Khan in Britain in 2014 after victory over Saul Alvarez

Amir Khan could face Floyd Mayweather in Britain next year after the American won his world light middleweight title bout here with a boxing masterclass against rising Mexican star Saul Álvarez.

By Gareth A Davies, Boxing Correspondent, Las Vegas10:00PM BST 15 Sep 2013

Mayweather, who is now undefeated in 45 fights, was awarded a 12-round majority decision by the judges, although many at the venue viewed it as a shutout.

Sitting ringside was Khan, who spoke of his desire to take on Mayweather, although the British fighter must first win a welterweight contest against American Devon Alexander early in December in Brooklyn.
“Fighting Floyd Mayweather is my dream fight,” the 26-year-old Khan said. “We are the superstars of boxing and, once I have got Devon Alexander out of the way, it will be Mayweather for me, fingers crossed. He is an amazing tactician but I know my speed will count against him – that is something I believe in 100 per cent.
“All the fighters who meet Floyd rely on their power, and although he is an amazing fighter, you have to fight him at his own game. You have to treat it like a chess game. You have to use your speed. He needs to fight someone as quick as him and I know that I am quicker than him.

“I met Floyd here at the weigh-in and he said that I was a great fighter. I want to fight him because he is a great fighter and I want to fight the best there is out there. Beating him would make me the best fighter on the planet. I am not saying I will knock him out but I have the speed to overcome him.”

However, Mayweather, who won both the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council titles, showed beyond any doubt that he remains boxing’s No 1 pound-for-pound fighter. After the weigh-in, at 152lbs, Alvarez entered the ring at 165lbs.
Mayweather, who weighed in 13lbs lighter than Álvarez, looked nothing like his 36 years against an opponent 13 years his junior. He commanded the entire bout, and there was universal derision towards judge CJ Ross, who gave a score of 114-114.
“From what I found out, this is the same judge who scored the fight for Timothy Bradley over Manny Pacquiao,” Mayweather said. “The Nevada State Athletic Commission is the best commission in the world, and if they feel it is right for the lady to judge, then that is fine by me. Things happen.”
Asked if he thought the scores of 117-111 and 116-112 were nearer the mark, Mayweather added. “He fought hard in there.” It was Alvarez’s first defeat in 44 fights.
A score of 119-110 for Mayweather would have been a truer reflection, Mayweather giving Álvarez only the eighth round, in which he came out with more zest.

Álvarez afterwards praised Mayweather’s sublime boxing skills. “He’s very fast, very accurate. His punches were not strong, but he scores points with them. It is what it is. He took me out of my game plan. And I had no answer for it.”
Time and again, Álvarez was left hitting air as Mayweather, who earned a basic purse of $41.5 million (£26.1 million), peppered his flame-haired opponent with the jab.

Mayweather started fast, imposed himself early in the fight, and showed that his reflexes, four years short of 40, were still razor sharp.
For round after round, changing levels, moving as was his wont from the ropes to the centre of the ring, Mayweather landed a faster, crisper jab, the straight right and right cross, and in the final third of the fight, a beautiful short right uppercut through the Mexican’s gloves.

All Álvarez could do was attack in bursts, but few punches landed as Mayweather countered.
A wild right hand from Álvarez in the penultimate round connected only with the ropes, much to Mayweather’s amusement. The champion paused, looked out through the ropes and gesticulated, as if to say, ‘Where was that punch going?’ It drew laughter from the crowd.

But there was nothing funny about this performance. Mayweather utilising his great experience and greater technique. It is still his time. This promotion was labelled ‘The One’. And Floyd Mayweather is clearly that.

Mayweather-Alvarez Scorecard Breakdown

By Felipe Leon

Floyd Mayweather won a seemingly wide twelve round decision on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Judge Craig Metcalf scored it 117-111 for Floyd, giving Canelo rounds two, ten and twelve. Judge Dave Moretti scored it 116-11r for Floyd, giving Canelo rounds three, nine, eleven and twelve. C.J. Ross had it 114-114, giving Canelo rounds one, three, eight, nine, eleven and twelve. Ross also had Timothy Bradley beating Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao defended his Ring Magazine featherweight world title.

Scoring Controversy

Judge Guy Jutras scored the fight 115-110 for Marquez, while judge John Stewart scored it 115-110 for Pacquiao.
The third judge, Burt Clements, had a 113-113 tie. His scoring included a 10-7 opening round because, he admitted later, he did not realize he could give a 10-6 round. If Clements had scored the opening round 10-6, as the other two judges had, Pacquiao would have won by 113-112 on Clements’s card and earned a split decision.
“I just screwed up,” Clements said. “I feel badly because I dropped the ball, plainly and simply. You can make a lot of arguments that it was a very close fight, but that’s immaterial. The fact is, I dropped the ball.”
Marc Ratner, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, ruled that Clements’s admission was no grounds for a protest.

Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton – Fight Analysis

Pacquiao vs Hatton – Game Plan Analysis

https://boxingstrategist.wordpress.com/

On May 2, 2009, Pacquiao fought at light welterweight, or super lightweight, division for the first time against Ricky Hatton at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, in a fight billed as “The Battle of the East and West.” Pacquiao won the bout via knockout to claim Hatton’s The Ring and IBO Light Welterweight titles. In doing so, Pacquiao became the second man in boxing history to become a six-division world champion, a fighter who won world titles in six different weight divisions and the first man ever to win lineal world titles in four different weight classes.[62]

The fight was originally placed in jeopardy due to disputes with both camps over the fight purse money.[63] Eventually, the money issue was settled and the fight went on as scheduled. HBO aired the contest.[64]

Pacquiao started the fight strong, knocking down Hatton twice in the first round.[65] A somewhat shaken Hatton beat the count, only to be saved by the bell seconds later. In the second round, Hatton seemed to have recovered, as he stalked Pacquiao for most of the round. However, with less than ten seconds remaining in the second round, Hatton was knocked out cold by a sharp left hook, prompting the referee to award Pacquiao the win by knockout (at 2:59 of the round).[66]

The knockout won him the The Ring Magazine “Knockout of the Year” for 2009.
